Brazilian games market emerges as a hub in Latin America

The first Brazil Games Industry Report, carried out in 2022 and commissioned by Abragames (Brazilian Game Companies Association) in partnership with ApexBrasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency), was presented for the first time at BIG Festival 2022. The study had a very positive impact on the market, as it reinforced the potential of the sector in the country and showed how much it has been growing in recent years.

The report highlighted that Brazil is now positioned as a hub in Latin America within the games segment, fostering new businesses and increasing revenues. According to the study, there are currently 1,009 game development studios in Brazil, which represents an increase of 169% over the past four years – in 2018, the country had 375 such companies.

Another information that called attention is that Brazilian game developers usually produce games for more than one area, diversifying their source of revenue. Among their main revenue sources are: entertainment games (76%), educational games (12%), advergames (6%), corporate training games (4%), and simulators using specific hardware (1 %).

The study revealed that the main consumer markets for the Brazilian production are the United States and Latin America, which respectively have already done business with 55% and 53% of Brazilian studios. Following are Western Europe (49%), Canada (49%), Portuguese-speaking countries (41%), Japan (37%) and China (24%).

“The study brings an unprecedented mapping of the Brazilian game development industry and presents data that places the country as an important hub for the sector in Latin America, as well as a talent hotbed for the global games market,” says Rodrigo Terra, president of Abragames.

The report is expected to be carried out annually in order to monitor the evolution of the national games market. The goal is to further expand the sources of information so that the database can help to identify changes, growth, specific projects and niches, among other things.

Eliana Russi, director of Abragames, concludes: “More and more, we have a richer and growing scenario in Brazil, and the report helps us to understand who these studios are, where they are, what they are doing, and what they need to develop.
